Since watching Emma Thompson&#8217;s <em>Sense and Sensibility <\/em>adaption in the mid-90&#8217;s, my favorite romantic sonnet has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folger.edu\/explore\/shakespeares-works\/shakespeares-sonnets\/read\/116\/\">No. 116<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shakespeare&#039;s Sonnet 116 (Sense and Sensibility)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/du9x5TT3rDs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other sonnets to include would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folger.edu\/explore\/shakespeares-works\/shakespeares-sonnets\/read\/18\/\">Sonnet 18<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/50503\/sonnet-98-from-you-have-i-been-absent-in-the-spring\">Sonnet 98<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also a great time to include Shakespeare&#8217;s rather cheeky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folger.edu\/explore\/shakespeares-works\/shakespeares-sonnets\/read\/130\/\">Sonnet 130<\/a>. In this sonnet, Shakespeare makes fun of the Petrarchan tendency to idealize the object of love. Shakespeare jokingly proclaims his lover&#8217;s eyes, hair, and cheeks are nothing special. She is no goddess; she walks on the ground. But movingly, Shakespeare ends this sonnet with the lines: &#8220;And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare\/As any she belied with false compare.&#8221; He sees her realistically, and still loves her and values her as rare. Read Sonnet 130 and then compare it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.folger.edu\/explore\/shakespeares-works\/twelfth-night\/read\/1\/1\/\"><em>Twelfth Night<\/em>, Act I, Scene 1<\/a>, in which Orsino proclaims his heartsick love for Olivia&#8211;a woman he does not end up marrying. Which version of love is more real? Orsino says beautiful, enchanting things about Olivia, but are they really about her or just his idea of her? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because current teens and tweens enjoying &#8220;rizzing each other up&#8221; with fake pickup lines, a fun activity would be using The Globe&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shakespearesglobe.com\/discover\/blogs-and-features\/2020\/02\/12\/30-shakespearean-chat-up-lines-for-valentines-day\/\">30 Shakespearean chat up lines for Valentine&#8217;s Day<\/a>.
